I'm a Whore notebook: Inspired by Philip Johnson

"I'm a Whore"

In a cheeky response to criticism surrounding his eclectic design approach, Philip Johnson remarked, "I am a whore . . . paid very well for high-rise buildings."

This seemingly humorous response actually carried a lot of weight as it pushed back against the strong "ism's" of architecture: modernism, postmodernism, classicism, and so on. It showed that Johnson didn't respect those self-imposed boundaries like most of his contemporaries did. He was willing to give the client what they wanted; at least what he thought they wanted.

While many of Johnson's buildings are derided in contemporary criticism, it is undeniable he played an oversized role in 20th Century architecture.
